Done!
I got the root canal this morning. They couldn't do the nitrous so I went with Valium. I did okay. I just cried a little in the chair, but I didn't freak out completely.
Not to brag about my accomplishments, but I made all of the arrangements all by myself.

3 cheers for valium! Great drug! I swear that the only reason that I acutally go to the dentist on a regular basis is the hope that I can ward off a root canal. I swaer-I'd rather have my appendix removed w/o anesthesia (again!) and have any big dental proceedure w/o major drugs! And good for you, making all of the arrangements yourself. I wonder why they couldn't do nitrous-it's not rocket science.
